Introduction: What is Reiju?
Reiju (霊授) means “Spiritual Blessing” or “Energy Attunement through Grace.” It is a sacred practice in Reiki that focuses on awakening and strengthening the connection to universal life force energy. Unlike modern attunement concepts, Reiju was originally a continuous spiritual process rather than a one-time ritual.Reiju in Mikao Usui’s Time
In the time of Mikao Usui, Reiki was practiced as a spiritual discipline (Reiki Ryoho). There were no levels or rigid structures. Reiju was given frequently, often in group settings, and was simple and meditative. Students would sit in Gassho (prayer position), and the teacher would facilitate an energetic alignment. There were no complex rituals or symbols involved.Purpose of Reiju:
– Deepen connection with Reiki energy – Enhance awareness and sensitivity – Support spiritual growth and inner stillness – Remove blockages so energy flows naturally Reiju During Hawayo Takata’s Era When Reiki spread to the West through Hawayo Takata, the practice became more structured.Changes introduced:
– Reiki divided into levels (Level 1, 2, Master) – Reiju became “attunement” – Given only a few times instead of regularly – Use of symbols and formal rituals This shifted Reiki from a spiritual path to a more technique-based healing system. Modern Reiki PracticeToday, Reiju exists in multiple forms:
- Attunement (mainstream teaching in Reiki courses)
- Traditional Reiju (revived by Japanese Reiki practitioners)
- Energy activation or frequency alignment (modern interpretations)
